Art Class | HUF Magazine

"Art Class" | HUF Magazine
Photography | Jennifer Avello
Model | Brianna Peeples of 10 MGMT
Makeup | Andrea C. Samuels of Factor Artists

I was inspired by MUA Yadim, but I wanted to put my own spin onto it.

I worked with my favorite:
Inglot Gel Liner #77
I used thick and thin brushes to create the lines on Brianna's face.
I used another favorite: Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + in shade #70

I also used different shades of lip colors from
Kryolan, Maybelline, OCC Cosmetics, Givenchy, and Tom Ford to complete the looks.

I am absolutely in love with how this story came out!

Pop Art | Lucy's Magazine with Ten Photos

The "Pop Art" editorial is out today in Lucy's Magazine.

These photos are new to all of you but very, very, VERY old to me; these were taken almost two years ago but they have finally been released to the public today. This is one of the hardest things about working with editorials: the wait is dreadful but to see your work in a new publication makes it all better. Unfortunately I don't remember every single product I used, but I wrote down the few things I could remember below.

So here is "Pop Art" for your viewing pleasure!

Photographer: Ten Photos

Retoucher: Samantha Hylla

Model: Clara Rae

MUA & Hair: Andrea C. Samuels

For every beauty editorial, I tend to be very hands on and very much a perfectionist with my work. Sometimes I plan out mood boards and sketch a few ideas so I can show the photographer and the team what I plan to do. I decided to try something completely new so I did not sketch or plan these looks out at all. I did find inspiration photos to mimic but I didn't even look at them once I started working with Clara. Deep, deep, down inside my soul I was scared to just let go but it felt liberating to just grab a random color and work with it. Working this way gave me a new appreciation for art. At this time, Clara had a new haircut and was just about to move to New York City, so I fed off her energy and created what I wanted.

For this first look, I played with my NYX Lip Palette in "Sweet Oranges". Although NYX is seen as a 'cheap' product to most people, this palette packs a punch; these oranges are really bright! I wanted the colors to pop and I also wanted to keep it simple by not adding blush or eyeshadow. I absolutely love how this came out and I really love the way Ten Photos experimented with different lighting to highlight her face.

For this second look, I always wanted to try blended colors on a models' face so it looks like a cloud of different shades. I had nothing like this in my portfolio so I just wanted to play and experiment with the colors I had. I think I was working with Ben Nye eyeshadows, Inglot Eyeshadows, and MAC Blushes; I really didn't think it through, I just grabbed a color and went with it.

The one thing I do remember using was this lip tar by OCC in "Anime". I also mixed this with other glosses so her lips looked like glass.

At this time, I remember Clara's face was getting sensitive and I had to slow down on putting too much product on her face. I opted to keep her lips and face clear and clean so I played up her eyes with new products I just bought. I don't use any of my green eyeshadows, so I just used this moment as an excuse to finally use them. I also wanted to play around with colored mascara, so I used my Inglot Gel Liner as mascara on Clara.

On her lips, I used Inglot AMC Gloss in #546

From this shoot, and many other shoots, I learned a little bit more about myself: I learned that I don't have to plan every single thing out, I don't have to be a control freak, I don't have to be a perfectionist. I can just be the artist I was born to be and paint.

That is my advice to you as well, don't get caught up in thinking 'this has to be perfect' or 'this has to be a certain way', when it comes to art, there is no such thing as 'perfect' or 'a certain way'. When you get the opportunity to work with a model and a photographer and you have free reign to do as you want, just paint and let it go. You might surprise yourself with the things you can create.

The Midas Touch | Ellements Magazine Beauty Issue

The Beauty Issue of Ellements Magazine just released today!

"The Midas Touch"

Photographer | Carissa Lancaster
Wardrobe Stylist | Clarissa V. Pierre
Model | Joanna Bajena of LModelz Management
Hair & Makeup | Andrea C. Samuels of Factor Artists
Nail Artist | Ashley Gregory of Ford Artists

The team worked with all gold EVERY thing

We wanted our model Joanna to start off fresh and innocent then later turn into a
Dark Goddess.

I was very inspired by both the wardrobe stylist, Clarissa, and the nail artist Ashley. Carissa the photographer had a lot of positive energy on set which helped the shoot run smoothly. Everyone kicked it up a notch and brought their A-Game to make this beauty editorial come to life.

We started off on a clean slate:
White, cream and gold was the palette in the wardrobe;
fresh, dewy makeup with nude nails completed the first couple looks

These are the makeup products I used:

Face
- AJ Crimson Dual Skin Foundation in Shade #1

FYI: This foundation feels amazing

AJ's "Dual Skin Foundation" is so creamy but it's not sticky, not flaky, not drying and not oily; it is not bad at all. It covers acne and scars VERY well and leaves a soft sheen on skin. I find it similar to Graftobian for all the curious artists out there who haven't tried this brand yet. I also really love AJ's foundations because it comes in the lightest hues to the darkest tones; it caters to all shades and I love brands that can provide this for all my clients.

- Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer in #1

Eyes
- Gold Leaf (only in inner corners) from Michaels Craft Store

Cheeks
- Inglot Face Illumintor in #61

FYI: This is one of the BEST Illuminators
This illuminator from Inglot is not glittery at all, this highlight creates the most gorgeous glow on skin in person and in camera. It is my most favorite highlighter by far and I highly recommend using this for bridal to fashion to runway work.

- MAC Blush in "Tenderling"

Lips
- Dior Addict Gloss in "Angelique"

I prefer to start all editorials with light makeup; it helps to build the mood and the color palette as the story grows darker. The makeup, nails and accessories have to mimic the wardrobe so it reads well on camera, so I try to keep that in mind and not get too distracted or too carried away with colors. As an artist, I can easily get distracted by looking at ALL the colors in my kit so I only pull out the specific products I need so I can stay consistent with the theme.

..................................................

The story moved into more golden, olive and bronze tones, so I went a tad bit darker here by using these beauty products on Joanna's eyes:

- Gold Leaf over eye lid (Michaels Craft Store)

FYI: Gold Leaf is hard to work with.

Gold Leaf is like tissue paper but it's lighter than a feather; if you don't hold it down well with your makeup brush, it will literally fly away from you. Gold leaf is not as dense as paper, so you will need something sticky for the gold leaf to adhere to skin. You could use lip gloss, lip balm, or lash glue; I ended up using lip balm because it was just the right amount of stickiness for me so incase I needed to adjust the gold leaf to frame the eyes, I can do it without disturbing the eyeshadow beneath.

357 (base) 363 (crease) 09 (lid) 21 (lower lid) 329 (outer corners)

- Bobbi Brown High Shine Gloss in Canary (on top of eyeshadow)

I also straightened Joanna's hair to create a Donatella Versace look

...............................................................

For Joanna's "Dark Goddess" look, Ashley added gold leaf all over Joanna's fingers to create her "Midas Touch" taking over her skin

I added a lip liner by MAC with a braided crown filled with gold pigment to give her a more regal look. I love how Joanna's mood changed once the clothing, makeup, hair and nails became more dramatic; she really got into character.

Eyes
- Added more Inglot Eyeshadow #329 on lower lid

Lips
- Rosebud Lipbalm

- MAC lip liner in "Currant"

................................................................

Over all, I am really pleased with this beauty story and I love how the team worked together and encouraged each other from beginning to end. We all tried something new and took risks for Ellements Magazine.  To view the rest of this story and to find out about the wardrobe credit, you can purchase your own copy right here:

Beauty Bliss | Profiles98 Magazine Beauty Issue

New work inside The Beauty Issue of Profiles98 Magazine

My makeup style was inspired by oil painter Peter Frederiksen, he created the backdrops for our story. I used pastel, spring colors from MAC to keep everything soft and feminine.

I'm going to NYFW! How did this happen?

I made an announcement last night via facebook, twitter, and instagram that I will be assisting two amazing, celebrity makeup artists next week at Mercedes Benz - New York Fashion Week. I instantly started getting inbox and text messages asking me, "HOW?"

Well, I'll tell you how!
I have to go all the way back to the beginning of my career to explain step by step how this happened.
This is a REAL Throwback Thursday.

------------------------------------------

This all started with this drawing I sketched in 2004.
I was attending Harold Washington College between 2002-2005. I drew a model I saw in Elle Magazine using my chalk pastels, my fingers, and an ink pen. Since I was 3 years old, I have always drawn models I saw in magazines, random faces, eyes, makeup, lips; I literally had no idea I was making face charts and preparing myself for my future.

I was a BROKE college student and I needed money to support myself. I stepped up to Macy*s , The Body Shop , and other retail places to interview for a sales associate position.

I had no resume, no experience, nothing: All I had was my ability to draw.

The management looked at me like I was crazy for only showing them my drawings, but they had faith that I could do makeup on customers, so The Body Shop hired me on the spot in August 2004.

Step 1: Discover your passion
This was when I first discovered my passion for makeup.

This was where I met a lot of amazing people like:
Vivienne, Jonilyn, RomneyLizi, Yesenia, JasmineBrittany, Ryan, Jordan, Justyn, Crystal, Anna, Shawn, Katie, EdithDanielleVera, Joaquin, Cleo, and last but NOT least my boss for 5 years, Ioana.

Each and every one of these people allowed me to experiment on their faces, or taught me something new, or we partied together, had fun together, laughed together, cried together. They all helped mold me into the woman I am today. I don't talk to every single person every day, but I think about all of them all the time. They don't realize how much of an impact they each had on me for my life.

To each and every one of my Body Shop crew: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

I wanted to learn about makeup as much as possible, so I signed up for school at Makeup First LLC in 2007.

-------------------------------------------

Step 2: Educate Yourself
It was here I learned from artists Jill Glaser and Lani Swasko about amazing makeup artists like Eve Pearl, James Vincent, Maurice Stein, Kevin James Bennett, and amazing products like Make Up For Ever and Cinema Secrets. It was here where I learned how to do theatrical makeup, makeup for film and media, clinical makeup, basic hair styling, airbrush makeup and agencies within the Midwest. School is not for every artist, but it helped me get more focused on what I should and shouldn't do for my career.
To Jill Glaser and Makeup First LLC: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

Once I graduated with my Makeup Artistry certificate, it led me to create my first website and sign up for Facebook in 2007.

-------------------------------------------
Step 3: Network

Through facebook, my little world of makeup grew into a major passion. I started networking with hair stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and any one related to fashion. This is where I met the young fashion photographer around 2008 from Tanzania, Africa: Nuru Kimondo.

Nuru is an extremely gifted young woman! I met her when she was just starting out, she was 16 at the time. We started doing photo shoots together on a weekly basis, we would hang out together all the time, traveled to New York together, we became really close friends.
To Nuru Kimondo: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

On one of our last photo shoots together, I met hair stylist Dee Desalu.

Dee is absolutely amazing and she wowed me with her hair skills. Dee is super sweet, talented and amazing at hair styling. Dee is a true hair artist!

We always kept in touch and sent each other work from time to time. Dee always kept me up to date on fashion, events, networking, how to make a perfect curl and things I never knew about with hair!

Dee Desalu: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

------------------------------------------

I met makeup artist Nicole Rogers via facebook.
Nicole was the first makeup artist I ever assisted on set, I reached out to her casting call for assistance and she brought me on board for a film set. I thought I knew what I was doing, but I didn't. Nicole put me in check REAL quick and told me what to do and what not to do with assisting another artist. If it weren't for her, I would have easily been a hot mess in my career.

To Nicole Rogers: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

------------------------------------------

Step 4: Maintain Industry Relationships

One day, out the blue, Dee tagged me and a few other mua's to a post on facebook about a makeup artist looking for assistants for The Makeup Show.
It was celebrity makeup artist: AJ Crimson.

I honestly did not think AJ would reach back out to me, or answer my email, or even bother to read my message but in less than five minutes, AJ called me and asked, "Are you available?"
I said, "YEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!"

So myself, DeCarr, George, and Sarah were able to assist AJ for the launch of his makeup line.

AJ Crimson: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

-------------------------------------------
Step 5: Find A Mentor

In June 2012, I was working with photographer Escalante on a weekly basis. I reached out to him and a lot of makeup artists and photographers within the industry just asking for help in 2010. The only person that reached back out to me was Escalante.

Escalante has been a fashion photographer for the past 25 years, so he knows all the ins and outs of the fashion industry from the United States to Europe. Escalante helped me sharpen my skills, fine tune my lines, quicken my pace with makeup, connected me to my first agency: The Rock Agency, and really helped me become an all around better makeup artist. He pushed me to my limits and encouraged me to do hair styling which I never thought in a million years I would ever do. He also encouraged me to travel and market myself outside of Chicago. Because of him, I dropped a lot of fears and doubts I had within myself and worked harder than ever before. I made my first trip to Los Angeles to visit my family, but little did I know I would also be signing with an amazing artists agency from a referral through AJ Crimson:

To Escalante: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU
------------------------------------------

Step 6: Take Risks

When I first signed with Black Board, they told me I needed better models, better photographers, better everything in order to get better jobs; that's when Jennifer Avello and I started working together more often. I started working with Jennifer in 2010.

Jennifer and I took risks together, experimented, completely changed our portfolios, we worked to exhaustion to try to make our books more to our liking. We were getting so frustrated with people telling us to tone down our work, and telling us, "Your work is not commercial enough." Or, "It's not edgy enough" or , "It's not good enough."

After a while, we said, "Fuck the agencies!" and we allowed our creative juices to flow when we worked together. We did whatever we wanted to do and our skills grew stronger together.
Jennifer Avello is absolutely amazing.
It wasn't until we did this photo shoot for Tantalum Magazine together, with stylist Marta of Factor Artists, that Black Board Group was finally excited about my work.
This was when I got the message on August 27th, 2013 simply asking,

"Are you available September 4th for fashion week?"

To Jennifer Avello: I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

------------------------------------------

Today was when I realized everything and every person in life is for a season and a reason:
- My drawing skills led me to employment at The Body Shop >
- which led me to  > school
- which led me to  > social media
- which led me to  > amazing and talented people that I networked with
- which led me to  > referrals
- which led me to  > fashion week

This was NOT an over night process.
Your journey will be completely different than mine, but just remember:
Who you meet today could be the key to your dreams coming true tomorrow.

---------------------------------------

It makes me sad that I'm not able to talk to all these people every day, but I understand now more than ever that they were all in my life for seasons and reasons that I can only explain is God's doing. I have been working, and planning, and editing, and deleting, and second guessing, and going broke, and messing up my career from the beginning, but it was ALL to prepare me for next week, and for the rest of my career.

So right now, if you are going through a crazy time period in your life, or if things are not panning out the way you hoped, or things are not as good as you think they could be, just remember:

It's only for a SEASON!
